How to Apply Hyaluronic Acid the Correct Way

Hyaluronic acid is commonly talked about in the skincare community. Amazingly, all skin types tend to tolerate it really well. It is best known for its plumping, hydrating, and softening effects on the skin. Hyaluronic acid is found in both the epidermis and the deeper dermis, where it’s important in hydration, metabolic processes, skin repair, and protection against free radical and UV damage. Hyaluronic acid is special in that it can hold an enormous amount of water... “1g of hyaluronic acid can hold onto 6 litres of water,” says chemistry PhD and science educator Michelle from Lab Muffin.

If you didn't already know, this is the CORRECT way to apply hyaluronic acid on the skin.

  1. First things first, You got to make sure your face is damp! Hyaluronic acid only works when your face is wet. Use a toner, a facial mist or simply water. The plumping effect is due to its humectant properties, meaning it can efficiently hold onto water thousands of times its weight.

  2. While your face is damp, apply a thin layer onto your face. Or you can go ahead and target specific areas that need more hydration and plumpness. In my case, I am focusing on my under eyes and forehead. Hyaluronic acid spreads easily, so more is less with this stuff.

  3. Seal your skin with a moisturizer. Moisturizers that contain occlusive ingredients acts as a seal. If no seal, water will evaporate out, meaning hyaluronic acid has to get moisture from elsewhere. That will be from within your skin. In the long run, hyaluronic acid can dehydrate the skin. Applying hyaluronic acid on dry skin will compound the effects of dehydration and will become visible.

Don’t just limit hyaluronic acid to your face. Consider the back of your hands, neck and even your chest - these are the places we tend to neglect = reveal your age (eeep!). Wherever you choose to apply hyaluronic acid, just make sure your skin is wet.

As we transition into the cold & dry season of the year, moisturizers are especially needed! It is also common to find hyaluronic acid or “sodium hyaluronate” in your moisturizer. Specifically, occlusive ingredients (ex. silicones, lanolin, petrolatum) physically seal your skincare in place and prevent transepidermal water loss (a process where water is lost out from the body to the epidermis then eventually evaporates into the atmosphere).

Thank you to Yeouth for gifting me their Hyaluronic Acid Serum to review! I am stunned by the ingredient list (only 2 things)! I use it every morning to help with my dry under eyes and I can feel the hydrating effect right away. The fact that it’s placed in a pump glass bottle is a definite plus! I’m generally not picky about packaging but I prefer glass bottles because I can re-purpose them instead of trashing them out when I’m done.
